Time to join the pieces together to create the legs of the Vide Knit Pants Sewing Pattern. I’m showing a flat assembly method in this tutorial, which differs from the traditional sewing method used for most woven pants. I think it gives more control and makes pressing easier, but you can of course sew the Vide pants like regular trousers too.
Best stitches for sewing the seams
You have several stitch options for sewing the Vide pants.
- 4-thread overlock (quick and durable)
- Narrow zigzag stitch (press the seam allowance open after sewing)
- Sewing machine overlock (you need to trim down the seam allowance to fit the width of the stitch, usually 5–6 mm wide)
Sew the crotch seams
With this flat assembly method, you join the front pieces by sewing together the front crotch seam. Then you do the same with the back pieces.
Sew front crotch seam
Place front pieces together, right sides facing. Align the crotch.
Sew the front crotch seam. Make sure you don’t stretch out the seam during sewing.
The front pieces joined together the crotch seam.
Sew back crotch seam
Place the back pieces together, right sides facing. Align the crotch.
Sew the back crotch seam.
Press the crotch seams
If you are using an overlock stitch, fold and press the seams of the front and back crotch in opposite directions to reduce bulk at the crotch area when you sew the inseam later.
This is how the back and crotch seams should be facing.
Sew the side seams
Lay front and back pieces together, right sides facing.
Sew both outer seams in the same sewing direction, (i.e. waist to hem). This means that the front will face up on one side.
Then the back will face up when you sew the other side seam, again starting at the waist.
Press the side seams
Press the side seams towards the back pieces. Start on the reverse side.
To completely flatten the side seams, do a second pressing on the right side, using a pressing cloth to protect the fabric.
Sew the inseam
With this method you sew the entire inseam as one continuous seam, starting from one leg opening and finishing at the other opening.
Pin together front and back in seams. Make sure the front and back crotch align.
Fold front and back crotch seams in opposite directions to reduce bulk.
Start at one leg opening and sew along the entire inseam.
Finish at the other leg opening.
Press the inseam towards the back.
Now the side seams are finished on the Vide Pants. I hope you found this assembly version useful and easy to follow.
