Making a statement (sleeve). I made this version of my #gurlitop sewing pattern using a rayon/lycra jersey geometrical print. The print has a little bit of an art deco deco vibe. Want to learn the secret to beautiful topstitching? Then follow these five simple tips to take your stitching to the next level 👌🏼 1. *Use regular thread in the bobbin*. Heavy thread will jam the bobbin on home sewing machines. Instead, use regular sewing thread. The difference is subtle and will be on the inside of your garment, so no one is looking anyways 😊 2. *Use an edge guide presser foot*. Topstitching near a seam or edge is much easier with a presser foot that has a center or edge guide. Most brands offer this presser foot. It may even be included in your kit. 3. *Adjust the tension*. Be prepared to adjust the needle tension when sewing with heavy thread. Balanced tension is when the needle and bobbin thread are tied evenly and not visible on the other side. 4. *Level the presser foot*. A presser foot must be horizontal to form stitches properly. If it tilts, you may face feeding issues and skipped stitches. Use a hump-jumper or fold a piece of fabric to fix this. 5. *Use needles with a larger eye*. My favourite needles are the @schmetz_official Topstitching and Jeans/Denim needles. They are durable and great for topstitching on thick fabrics and layers. It's all in the details 🧵 A closer look at the detailing of the Patou knock-off jeans I made recently. It was so fun mixing traditional dress trouser elements such as back darts and slanted pockets with regular denim techniques. I also added some cotton quilt fabric scraps to the pocket lining and found a beautiful gold button in the bargain bin at a thrift store. Let's master the machine blind hem in 5 easy steps. If you're feeling unsure about how to do it or are having trouble making it invisible, then try this 👇🏼
1. *Fold the Hem*: Fold up the hem, then fold back the outer layer to expose a 6 to 10 mm (¼–3/8”) extension.
2. *Align the Fabric*: Align the fold with the presser foot guide, ensuring no gaps and that it rests against the blade without cramming the fabric.
3. *Adjust for Visible Thread*: If the needle catches too much fabric, decrease the stitch width slightly.
4. *Adjust for Missed Fabric*: If the needle misses, increase the stitch width slightly.
5. *Use a Magnifying Lamp*: A magnifying lamp is super helpful for the blind hem stitch, particularly on darker fabrics. I love mine and use it for EVERYTHING!
