It's all in the details 🧵 A closer look at the detailing of the Patou knock-off jeans I made recently. It was so fun mixing traditional dress trouser elements such as back darts and slanted pockets with regular denim techniques. I also added some cotton quilt fabric scraps to the pocket lining and found a beautiful gold button in the bargain bin at a thrift store. Let's master the machine blind hem in 5 easy steps. If you're feeling unsure about how to do it or are having trouble making it invisible, then try this 👇🏼
1. *Fold the Hem*: Fold up the hem, then fold back the outer layer to expose a 6 to 10 mm (¼–3/8”) extension.
2. *Align the Fabric*: Align the fold with the presser foot guide, ensuring no gaps and that it rests against the blade without cramming the fabric.
3. *Adjust for Visible Thread*: If the needle catches too much fabric, decrease the stitch width slightly.
4. *Adjust for Missed Fabric*: If the needle misses, increase the stitch width slightly.
5. *Use a Magnifying Lamp*: A magnifying lamp is super helpful for the blind hem stitch, particularly on darker fabrics. I love mine and use it for EVERYTHING!

Cutting knits can be tricky, so here are 5 super easy tips that will make a BIG difference. The tips are from the first #videpants Sew-Along post that is up now on the blog (thelaststitch.com) 1. Knit fabrics don't have straight edges, so don't measure the grainline from the edge. Look for a vertical pattern, like a rib, and align the pattern grainline with it. 2. Or fold the pattern along the grainline to align it. Then align the folded edge with the knit fabric's vertical pattern. Open and lay the pattern flat on the fabric. 3. Use pattern weights. Pins on knits can distort the fabric. Instead, use pattern weights to keep the pattern pieces in place during cutting. I love using thick metal washers as pattern weights. If you use pins, do so sparingly and close to the edges. 4. Mark the right side of the fabric using fabric-friendly tape, pins, or post-it notes. Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish the right from the wrong side, especially on darker knits. 5. Instead of using tailor’s chalk that rubs off easily, clip tiny notches, 2–3 mm long (⅛"), onto the seam allowances. If the knit fabric is prone to unraveling, such as sweater knits, use pins or tape to mark the notches. #sewingtips #sewingtutorial #sewingknits #sewingwithknits #thelaststitchpatterns #sewingtricks
